Pepper exports rise during first nine months
Pepper exports totalled 111,110 tonnes and fetched a value of US$269 million in the first nine months of the year, an increase of 53.8 per cent in volume and 6.3 per cent in value compared to the same period last year, according to the Viet Nam Pepper Association.
In September, export volume slowed to 14,000 tonnes, although export value reached $38 million, an increase of $1 million over August’s figures, the association said.
Duong Long Tri, deputy director of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Information Technology and Statistics Centre, said pepper prices in September stood at about $2,400 per tonne, higher than earlier this year but still about 32 per cent lower than the average price in 2008.
Some exports were particular bright spots during the first nine months of this year, Tri said, noting that the quantity of pepper exported to the US during the period had risen by 23.35 per cent, while turnover rose by a more modest 4.76 per cent. Exports to Germany, meanwhile, more than doubled in volume and grew by 20.8 per cent in value.
Yields and supplies of pepper remained high, said Viet Nam Pepper Association chairman Do Ha Nam. "The pepper yield was over 100,000 tonnes, which is 5 per cent higher than in 2008," Nam said.
