Japan to support craft development in Vietnam northwest
Vietnam and Japan signed the record of discussion for a technical cooperation project to develop handicrafts in the northwestern region of Vietnam , in Hanoi on Oct. 22.
Signatories were Ho Xuan Hung, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Motonori Tsuno.
The 3-year project is aimed at promoting development of the craft industry and forestry product processing, thus improving the living conditions of the local residents in the region’s four provinces of Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Hoa Binh and Son La.
The project will support farmers through enhancing rural development activities of concerned government agencies and social organisations, providing farmers with knowledge and techniques of processing, marketing, business management and sales promotion.
It is the one of the first projects to be launched by JICA since it merged with ODA loan operations of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) in October 2008.
JICA now focuses on the three fields of technical assistance, soft loans and grant aid from the Government of Japan.
