Melamine brings opportunities to domestic confectioners
Local confection producers hope to see high sales on Christmas and the Lunar New Year as consumers now tend to refuse imports for fear of melamine.
Ngo Van Hai, Deputy Director of Citimart chain, said that distributors still have not yet imported products for sale on Tet like they did in previous years. It is because of the difficulties of the national economy, which has forced them to listen to the news before making any decision on importing commodities.
Also according to Hai, the fact that melamine was found in products imported from China has badly affected the confection market. Confections from China, Malaysia and Singapore now account for only 20% of the market share.
According to Duong Thi Quynh Trang, Public Relations Manager of Big C Supermart Chain, in previous years, importers of products from Malaysia and Indonesia always offered to sell products in September and October. However, no importer has offered anything so far, though Tet is just three months away.
A Muoi, the owner of a grocery store at Old Market on Ton That Dam street in district 1, HCM City, also said that no importer has offered to sell products so far. Muoi said that in previous years, Chinese, Malaysian and Singaporean products sold very well thanks to soft prices. However, enterprises now hesitate to import products from the countries, fearing that the products will be unmarketable due to the Chinese words on the package.
Muoi has forecast that domestic confections will sell well this Tet as consumers are turning their backs on Chinese products, while products from Europe prove to be unaffordable for most Vietnamese consumers.
Domestic confection producers have been gearing up production to prepare for sales on Tet. Trang from Big C said that domestic suppliers, including Bibica, Kinh Do, Tan tan, Hanco and Hai Ha, have offered a wide range of products.
Phan Van Thien, Deputy General Director of Bibica, said the company plans to market more than 40 items this Tet with the output to increase by 120% over last year.
Nguyen Thi Dieu Hien, Public Relations Officer of Kinh Do Confectionary Group, said that Kinh Do plans to increase output by 30% and market some 30 new product items.
