CG meeting kicks off in Lao Cai province
The Informal Mid-term Consultative Group (CG) Meeting of donors for Vietnam opened in Sapa, northern Lao Cai province, on June 6.
The meeting, co-organised by the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the World Bank (WB), brought together representatives from bilateral and multilateral donors for Vietnam , and 14 local northern mountainous provinces.
Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong told the meeting that Vietnam ’s urgent tasks this year are to curb inflation, stabilise macro-economy and ensure social welfare and sustainable development.
The deputy PM said the Government of Vietnam will make greater efforts to better the use of resources, including foreign aid; minimise rising negative phenomena; and strengthen the fight against corruption, helping to promote socio-economic development with priority given to remote, isolate and ethnic minority-inhabited areas.
Reported delivered at the meeting showed that Vietnam has so far this year posted positive achievements in socio-economic development, particularly the continued improvement of investment environment and a record amount of over 15 billion USD in foreign direct investment as the worthy of note successes.
However, WB Vice President James Adams warned of emerging challenges faced by Vietnam in the recent months. The country’s growth remains high, but the Government has to cope with a number of issues such as trade deficit and inflation, he said.
The WB official said he hoped that these issues will be discussed with the government to find out effective measures.
Minister of Planning and Investment Vo Hong Phuc said despite difficulties of capital sources, Vietnam has still received support from donors, both in policy consultancy and pledged funding.
In addition to the macro economy, the meeting is scheduled to discuss other issues, including reports from the Vietnam Business Forum and the dialogue on anti-corruption, development of northern mountainous provinces, aid efficiency, and matters related to climate change and ethnic minorities.
