The number of Vietnamese stock millionaires halves

The stock price sharp falls have led to the number of Vietnamese stock millionaires decreasing dramatically from 450 in 2010 to 270 in 2011.

VnExpress local newspaper is going, for the sixth time, to release the list of Vietnamese stock millionaires which affirms the foreseen sharp fall in the number of millionaires.

The lists of top 100 stock millionaires, top 50 women on the stock market and top 30 families which have the biggest stock asset values would be made public by VnExpress on the last trading session of the stock market of the year and the first days of 2012.

Finishing a stormy year with many ups and downs, the assets of the individuals who hold the biggest volumes of shares on the stock market have decreased dramatically.

The estimated figures show that by the end of December 2011, the total stock assets of 100 richest stock millionaires had reached 55 trillion dong. The figure is still equal to 10 percent of the capitalization value of the two bourses; however, this represents the sharp fall of 40 percent from the 90 trillion dong of 2010.

The gaps in the total assets of the millionaires in the top 100 list have become wider: the 20 individuals that top the list are holding the assets valued at over 41,600 billion dong, or 75 percent, which is much higher than the 67 percent level of 2011.

The 2011’s top 100 list has said “goodbye” to 20 individuals, who have seen their assets decreasing, partially because they have sold part of their shares, or transferred to the families’ ownership. However, the asset value decreases have been mainly attributed to the sharp falls of the stock prices.

In 2010, the stock market had 450 dollar millionaires, while the figure has dropped by 50 percent to 270. The number of individuals with the total assets of more than one trillion dong has also dropped from 19 to 9.

Even the individual who leads the top 100 list still has failed to become a dollar billionaire.

However, in the dark picture of the stock market in 2010, experts still can see bright parts. A lot of new people have appeared in the top 100, or many have obtained higher grades in the list.

In the current economic difficulties, the shares being held by the individuals still have been highly valuated on the market, mostly because of the effective corporate governance and the high business efficiency of the businesses where they are shareholders. Thanks to this, the assets of some individuals still have increased by one trillion dong.

In releasing the list of the stock millionaires for the sixth time, VnExpress got the support from the partner which provided database – VNDirect Securities Company.

After considering and analyzing the figures announced by 723 enterprises which list their shares on both the Hanoi and HCM City bourses, the list of the 100 richest stock millionaires would be made public after the last trading session on December 30.
