Tra fish exports net more than US$1 billion
Despite a number of difficulties, tra fish farming in the Mekong Delta region is expected to achieve an output of more than 1 million tonnes and an export turnover of over US$1 billion this year.
Ten Mekong Delta provinces boast a total of more than 5,000 hectares of tra fish, more than 1,200 hectares of which yield an average 240 tonnes per hectare. Dong Thap province ranks first with 302 tonnes per hectare, following by Vinh Long (300 tonnes per hectare), Tien Giang (264 tonnes per hectare) and Tra Vinh (267 tonnes per hectare).
To produce and consume tra fish sustainably, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has urged these provinces to keep a close watch on foreign markets, pay more attention to the domestic market and better organise links between processors and breeders.
Breeders should apply advanced technology in raising fish, protect the environment, improve both quality and variety, ensure food hygiene and safety, and reduce production costs.
