Vietnam’s first steam sterilization plant opens
Vietnam’s first steam sterilization plant opened Wednesday in southern Binh Duong Province, providing a solution to a current ban on non-steamed Vietnamese fruit exports to Japan.
The US$4 million Yasaka Fruit Plant, a wholly Japanese-owned subsidiary of Yasaka Fruit Processing Limited will sterilize about 4,000 dragon fruit a year during the first phase of operations.
The plant is equipped with an automatic line which classifies the fruit according to weight and sugar levels.
Yasaka general director, Wantanabe Wataru told Tuoi Tre newspaper the plant would begin sterilizing dragon fruit as soon as the Japanese government lifts its import ban on Vietnamese fresh fruit.
The Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced early this month the country will allow imports of steam-treated Vietnamese dragon fruit only.
Vietnamese dragon fruit is currently sold to Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, China, the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and the U.S.
