Larger wharf enhances Khanh Hoa port

The Viet Nam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) has agreed to build a larger wharf at a proposed port in Khanh Hoa Province, following a suggestion by the former acting director of the Viet Nam Maritime Administration.

Chu Quang Thu said last week the port needed to accommodate larger vessels and should build larger wharves.

Duong Chi Dung, president of Vinalines, said it had completed the design of two wharves and had submitted a proposal for another to the Government.

Two of the wharves would be able to accommodate ships with a carrying capacity of 9,000 TEU (20-foot equivalent unit) each, instead of two 6,000 to 9,000 TEU ones, as previously proposed.

The US$200 million Van Phong Bay project is expected to start in October, with Vinalines planning to build wharves of 12,000 to 15,000 TEU following the completion of two smaller ones.

Dung said a wharf of 18,000 TEU would be too large because the 18-metre water depth was too shallow for ships to navigate.

Thu had proposed building one 15,000 TEU wharf rather than two wharves of 6,000 to 9,000 TEU each.

Dissenting views

The chairman of the Khanh Hoa Association of Marine Science and Technology, Nguyen Thiet Hung, also believed that a 15,000 TEU wharf should be built at the intercontinental port.

Architect Doan Manh Dung, the former director of the Viet Nam Seaport Infrastructure Committee, said the port board would build other wharves if needed, but a 15,000 TEU wharf should be built first.

Hung was concerned about the competitiveness of the port because the provinces and cities nearby, including HCM City, were major exporters and importers.
