Port backlog to clear
A backlog at Saigon Port, which has been causing headaches for cargo owners, will be cleared by May 21, the port’s general director Le Cong Minh told Tuoi Tre on Tuesday.
A surge in the number of ships arriving at the port this year has caused delays in loading and unloading vessels, with some ships queuing for up to a month for a docking berth.
Cargo owners have complained about the delays, which left some shipments spoiled, or forced them to hire their own stevedores to transfer goods from a queue-bound ship to the shore.
Earlier this month, Minh promised to hire 1,000 extra dock workers to help clear the backlog.
On Tuesday, he said all the vessels that have been stranded in the queue will be loaded and unloaded by Wednesday. After the queue is cleared, Saigon Port will return to its normal loading and unloading pace, he said.
Minh said the port can receive a maximum of 25 ships at a time but since April the port had been receiving up to 50 ships a day.
