Global financial crisis main focus for ASEM enterprises
Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Vu Tien Loc speaks to Dau Tu (Viet Nam Investment Review) newspaper about tomorrow’s talk on the framework of the Asia-Europe Meeting.
It is the first time companies’ activities have been discussed at ASEM. Is it Viet Nam’s initiative in its role as host of the ninth ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM 9) later this month?
Yes, it is. And it will be one of the first sideline activities of the FMM 9. When Viet Nam hosted ASEM, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs suggested the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry organise a talk between enterprises within ASEM. This would help enhance the political co-operation as well as boosting the economic relationship between the enterprises.
The economic co-operation within ASEM has been slow. Therefore, the talk could be considered a strong effort by Viet Nam to create practical activities for ASEM, especially for developing countries.
What will be discussed?
The talk aims to boost co-operation between Asia and Europe in order to find ways to work together to overcome the global financial crisis. Besides representatives from ministries, sectors, localities and Vietnamese enterprises, enterprises from ASEM nations, which are investing and running business in Viet Nam, will join the talk. Embassies, international organisations and foreign business associations to Viet Nam will also attend.
We will focus on four main topics. Firstly, how the global financial crisis has impacted on economies. Secondly, the promotion of trade and investment between Asia and Europe. The influence of financial policies from Asian-European economies on enterprises’ activities will be evaluated. Next, co-operation between the ASEM nations to boost sustainable development in the post-crisis period will be discussed. And finally, the talk aims to find ways to improve trade and investment between Vietnamese and ASEM enterprises.
It is hoped that opinions and petitions from enterprises and business communities at the talk will be considered by the ASEM nations and submitted to the FMM 9.
To enhance business and investment co-operation between the ASEM’s and Vietnamese enterprises is always the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s main goal.
How will Vietnamese enterprises benefit from the talk?
The talk will be at international and regional level but Viet Nam will get the most benefits from the hosting role.
We will have opportunities to comprehensively introduce not only our current relationship on economy, trade and investment but also our potential to develop relationship.
We hope to create a forum for the ASEM’s and Vietnamese enterprises to directly exchange their experiences in overcoming the economic crisis.
