Rules not tough enough to keep out low-quality imports: Officials
Vietnamese regulations and standards are too weak to protect consumers from poor-quality imported products, officials admit.
Tran Van Dung, director of the Quality Assurance and Testing Center 3 in Ho Chi Minh City, said Vietnam issued 20 sets of technical regulations and standards for domestic-made and imported products in the past two years.
But they are not enough, he said at a conference last week.
Phan Minh Tan, director of the city’s Department of Science and Technology, said regulators have called for tightening standards to better protect consumers and businesses.
But they have met with resistance from some government agencies which said local businesses cannot meet these standards because of their low capabilities, he said.
