New express train plan gathers steam

A proposal to build an express railway between Vietnam’s two biggest cities has been put before the Government for approval.

Sweden ’s SkeriNova Holding Group outlined the proposed Hanoi-HCM City railway at a meeting with the Ministry of Planning and Investment’s Department of Infrastructure and Urban Affairs last week.

Under the proposal, the railway would have two lanes with an average speed of 437 km per hour and would be built on a build-operate-transfer contract.

“Capital investment for the project will be discussed later when it is accepted by the Vietnamese Government,” SkeriNova chairman and CEO Lars-Ivar Sundberg said.

Apart from supplying trains, equipment and technology, SkeriNova would be responsible for building and operating the railway while Vietnam would be in charge of site clearance, Sundberg said.

The project, the first of its kind in the world, was proposed to start next year and be finished in 2015.
