Vietnam 2008 rice shipments total 4.7 million tons

Vietnam, the world’s second-biggest rice exporter after Thailand, shipped 4.7 million metric tons of rice last year, said the Vietnam Food Association.

The country plans to export at least 4 million tons of the grain this year, as requested by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on December 29.

Exports of the grain in 2007 were 4.5 million tons, according to the agriculture ministry.
