ISP raises service of speed to 31.5Gbps

Viet Nam's major internet-service provider, the Viet Nam Data Communications Co (VDC), has linked to an Hong Kong-based international internet channel providing an extra 12.5 Gbps (Gigabytes per second).

The new link raises VDC's total international transmission capacity to 31.5 Gbps.

The extra capacity will allow a number of new value -added services such as Mega Movie, Mega Data, and personalised websites.

It is also expected to help the VDC maintain a stable network connection in an emergency and avoid network overload in peak hours.

"The new link will become a back-up for the national internet backbone network," said VDC's general director Vu Hoang Lien.

The Viet Nam Post and Telecommunication Group (VNPT) subsidiary plans to double its international internet transmission capacity this year in a bid to meet increasing demand.

Its parent company will spend US$1 billion to upgrade the national broadband network.

The investment will include the installation of two additional international internet transmission lines to the US.

Viet Nam has five internet service providers (ISPs), 20.6 million internet users and 1.9 broadband internet subscribers, according to the Viet Nam Internet Information Centre. VDC subscribers total 1.4 million.

The yearly growth in the number of internet users has averaged 36 per cent since the country's connection to the global network in 1997.

Connection speeds have increased 7,500 times while internet connection charges remain among the lowest in the world.

There are now some 55,000 websites registered under the.vn domain, with education, commerce and health the drivers of internet growth.

Tertiary institutions throughout the country are now linked to the Internet, as are 92 per cent of companies and 50 per cent of secondary schools and provincial hospitals.

Many isolated communities now have access and 56 of the country's 63 provinces and cities have launched their own websites.
