Japan assists Vietnam in developing transport system
How to sustainably develop Viet Nam’s transport system was the theme of a seminar held in Ho Chi Minh City on Sept. 5. It was part of a technical assistance programme of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
As from Nov. 2007, a JICA team in coordination with the Ministry of Transport has been working on a Comprehensive Study on Transport System Sustainable Development Strategy in Vietnam (VITRANSS 2).
According to Dr. Ly Huy Tuan, Deputy Head of VITRANSS 2 Managing Board and Director of the Transport Strategy Institute, the study aims to help Vietnam to design a transport development strategy by 2030, a master plan till 2020, and investment projects in the 2011-2015 period.
The study, which is scheduled to finish in August 2009, will also aim to build a master plan for the construction of a transnational highway express network and technology transfer to Vietnam .
The participants, including representatives from transport departments of southern provinces, heard Dr. Iwata Shizuo, head of VITRANSS 2 study team, reporting a draft strategy for transport development in Vietnam .
According to the Ministry of Transport, Vietnam ’s transport infrastructure has been increasingly upgraded and developed. However, the country is facing problems of worsening transport safety, traffic jams in big urban centres and poor transport facilities in rural areas.
The government has planned to develop a transnational highway express network via the central region to meet the increasing demands of transport.
