Vietnam to develop supporting industry selectively
Vietnam regards supporting industry a driving force for national industrialisation and modernisation and a foundation for sustainable development of its major industries to 2020, a senior government official has said.
Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang made the remarks at the first National Seminar on “Action Plan for Development of Supporting Industry of Vietnam,” in Hanoi on Sept. 5.
Hoang, however, stressed that supporting industry must be developed selectively, taking into account the country’s potential and strength and international labour distribution.
As a leading country in building supporting industry, Japan , at the seminar, showed eagerness to help Vietnam develop this industry.
Kenichi Ohno, Project Leader, Vietnam Development Forum (VDF), of Japan , proposed specific supportive moves to translate his country’s intention into deeds.
These include building business capacity, developing human resources, promoting the relationships between FDI and local businesses, formulating legal framework, and adopting financial incentives for businesses.
“ Vietnam is no longer a transitional and low-income country. So, the Japan-Vietnam cooperation should shift to creating a new resource to fuel competition”, Ohno said.
In doing so, Ohno pointed to the need to establish a Vietnam-Japan partnership which is modelled on “Monozukuri” (Japanese art of manufacturing) to assist Vietnam in implementing its supporting industry master plan which was approved by the Prime Minister last July.
For its part, the Planning Institute of the Ministry of Industry and Trade suggested that the Vietnam-Japan cooperation programme on developing supporting industry focus on the manufacturing of electronics, office equipment, vehicles and motorbikes, and precise mechanical engineering products.
The Institute also suggested bilateral cooperation in training, transfer of governance skills and technology, cooperation between Vietnamese and Japanese businesses and infrastructure development.
The seminar was co-organised by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO)
