Plan unveiled for central airport upgrade

Local authorities and the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam Thursday announced the blueprint for upgrading an airport in the central province of Quang Nam.

Expansion of the Chu Lai airport will see its first phase completed in 2015 and second phase in 2025.

The upgrade is expected to cost VND11.5 trillion (US$684.5 million).

A 4,000-meter-long runway will be built in the first phase while another runway of 3,800 meters will be ready in the second phase.

The airport will have 25 and 46 parking bays in the two stages.

It is expected to receive 2.3 million passengers a year and 1.5 million tons of freight by 2015.

These will go up to 4.1 million passengers and five million tons by 2025.
