Vietnam builds largest alumina plant
Construction of a 466-million-USD alumina plant, the largest of its kind in Vietnam , kicked off in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong on July 26.
The plant is the start-up of the aluminium industry in Vietnam , Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai said at the ground breaking ceremony. He added that it is important to the aluminium industry in particular and the nation’s industrial sector in general in the following decades.
Part of the 687-million-USD Lam Dong bauxite and aluminum complex, the alumina plant is expected to help boost socio-economic development in the Central Highlands, the deputy PM also said.
The alumina plant, invested by the Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) and built by the China Aluminum International Engineering Co. (Chalieco) within two years, is projected to turn out annually 600,000 tons of alumina, a white powder for producing aluminum.
According to Vinacomin, the plant will use raw material - bauxite ore - at the Tay Tan Rai Mine in Lam Dong province, which has an estimated reserves at 67 million tonnes.
