Paper industry forecasted to meet domestic demand

By 2010, the paper industry will be capable to meet domestic demand, southern businesses of the Vietnam Paper and Pulp Association said at a conference held in Ho Chi Minh City on July 28.

The forecast is based on the growing domestic production and capacity of future paper pulp and production plants.

The industry witnessed an increase of 42 percent in production of newsprint, 21.1 percent in writing paper and 25.4 percent in packing paper, in the first six months of the year.

This year, it is expected to turn out about 70,000 tonnes of newsprint and 321,600 tonnes of writing paper, meeting 54 percent and 87 percent of the domestic demand, respectively.

Due to growing consumption demand the industry plans to import between 60,000-85,000 tonnes of newsprint, 80,000 tonnes of writing paper, and 400,000 tonnes of packing paper in 2009.

By 2010, some paper pulp production plants will be put into operation.
