VNPT rolls out marine cable line

Viet Nam Telecom International (VTI), an affiliate of the Viet Nam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), launched the submarine cable system known as Asia America Geteway (AAG) yesterday.

The system will hook into the national network in the southern coastal province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

Plans call for the AAG submarine communications cable system to connect Southeast Asia and the US.

It will reach a length of about 20,000km and deliver up to 2 terabits per second.

It may also connect with Australia, India, Europe and Africa. A contract to build and protect the AAG was officially signed in Malaysia in April 2007.

The AAG has an initial investment capital of more than US$553,600 million, including $40 million from the VNPT.

Seventeen international telecommunications companies have invested in the cable system.
