Vietnam targets 2010 growth at 6.5 percent
The National Assembly targeted 2010 national economic growth at 6.5 percent to coincide with sustainable social development.
Deputies at the sixth session of the 12th National Assembly that wrapped up Friday, in Hanoi, approved the target and called for greater macro-economic stability and transparency.
A September World Bank report said Vietnam recorded GDP growth of 6.2 percent in 2008 and forecasts that figure to dip to 5.5 percent this year.
The NA is also pushing for spending on infrastructure in 2010 to account for 41 percent of GDP – or US$ 41 billion.
Industry targets, common in centrally-planned and communist economies, were set for increases in: Agro-forestry and fisheries by 2.8 percent, industry and construction at 7 percent and services by 7.5 percent.
Optimistic goals of creating 1.6 million jobs next year, including 85,000 migrant jobs abroad; and increasing the number of hospital beds to meet the international average of 27.5 beds per 10,000 people, from the current number of 18 beds, were also tabled pushed through at the session.
Other targets include: 83 percent of the rural population being provided with clean water, 45 percent of industrial and export processing parks housing concentrated waste treatment systems and raising total forest coverage nationally to 40 percent.
