Prime Minister budgets for hospital upgrades

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung recently approved allocation of 14 trillion VND (725.2 million USD) to upgrade district-level hospitals in 63 provinces and cities through 2010.

The funds would be used to improve the quality of medical treatment and ease the patient overload in higher-level medical facilities such as hospitals in provinces and cities.

The capital comes from Government bonds and other domestic sources, including municipal and provincial funds.

Fourteen northern mountainous provinces will receive 3.3 trillion VND, while the northern Red River Delta area will be allocated 1.99 trillion VND.

The Red River Delta will also receive 836.01 billion VND from local budgets to build and upgrade general hospitals in districts.

Part of the total amount will go to north-central and central coastal Vietnam.

These areas are some of the most disadvantaged parts of the country, and will be granted an additional 804.2 billion VND from local budgets and other domestic sources.

Other areas, the Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) with five provinces, will receive 1.12 trillion VND and six provinces and cities in the southeastern region, 571.7 billion VND.

The Mekong Delta, the country’s biggest rice bowl with 13 provinces, will be allocated 3.45 trillion VND and receive 660.1 billion VND from the local budget to upgrade district hospitals and clinics.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment, in co-ordination with the ministries of Finance and Public Health, will be responsible for disseminating information on the annual bond capital.

According to the Government, local provincial authorities must supplement capital from local budgets to upgrade district-level hospital networks.
