Finance Ministries of Vietnam and Laos: Successful 8th meeting of Steering Committee for Co-operation Program
To implement the Cooperation Plan in 2011 between the Ministries of Finance of Vietnam and Laos, from 26 to 27/12/2011, the 8th meeting of the Steering Committee for the Co-operation Program between Ministry of Finance of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and Laos Ministry of Finance was held in Hanoi under the chairmanship of Deputy Minister Nguyen Cong Nghiep - Head of the Vietnam Steering Committee and Vice Minister of Finance Viêng-thong Si phăn-đon - Head of Laos Committee. Attending the meetings were the Steering Committee members, representatives of relevant units of both Finance Ministries, the Lao Embassy in Vietnam.

Overview of the Meeting

The meeting was held at the significant time when the two countries began implementing the plan of socio-economic development for the 5 year period from 2011 to 2015 and the two Ministries of Finance began to implement the first year of the Cooperation Agreement between the Ministries of Finance of Vietnam and Laos recently signed on 12/12/2011 during the visit to Vietnam of Laos Finance Minister.
At the meeting, leaders of the two Ministries informed each other of the economic situation and financial achievements in the reform of financial management in 2011. At the meeting, the implementation of cooperation programs in 2011 was assessed and the contents of cooperation for 2012 were agreed. The two sides also approved the contents of the report of implementation of cooperation programs in 2011 proposed by the Steering Committees of both sides.

The meeting appreciated the work done, pointing out the difficulties and work out the measures to further implement the cooperation in the years to come. In 2011, the exchange and coordination among the Steering Committee of the two Ministries has been maintained. The support activities have been implemented well, bringing practical results which were appreciated by the Ministry of Finance of Laos. The Financial Human Resource Exchange activities were maintained regularly to strengthen the relations and special solidarity between the two financial institutions. The Cooperative activities between University of Finance and Marketing (Ministry of Finance) and Finance College of South Laos had obtained good results. Lao government decided to award a Isala Medal to this University.
The meeting also discussed and determined the direction of the focus of cooperation in 2012 on the basis of Laos’ needs and the ability of Vietnam's Ministry of Finance. Accordingly, in 2012 the cooperation plan would focus on priorities of capacity training of the three financial universities in northern, central and southern areas of Laos, improving the quality of teachers, the efficiency of the apparatus of the Ministry of Finance of Laos, supporting the implementation of programs to make laws and legal documents of the Ministry of Finance in 2012, and organizing exchanges for the financial sector for both countries in Laos in 2012 or in the first quarter of 2013.
The 8th Meeting of the Steering Committee for Co-operation Program between Ministries of Finance of Vietnam and Laos was a great success. The two sides agreed to hold the 9th meeting in Laos in the fourth quarter of 2012
