New Vientiane hotel opens for business

Daokham Hotel and restaurant opened its doors on Monday in response to the growing number of visitors to Vientiane and to cater to the growing trend of wedding parties taking place in hotels.

The hotel is located in Khounta village, Sikhottabong district. Construction began in November 2009 and finished this month at a total cost of US$3.9 million.

Hotel owner Mr Khanthong Sixanady commented that Vientiane is becoming more popular with overseas tourists and facilities to cater to them are growing in number.

“This was a significant factor in my decision to build the hotel, which will serve the growing number of people coming to the capital including tourists, and contribute to economic growth,” he said.

The hotel comprises 41 rooms including 11 special rooms and 10 VIP rooms. The restaurant can cater for a party of 1,500 people. Its facilities also include a large car park, conference facilities, a karaoke bar and a performance stage.

Mr Khanthong said more people are holding parties in restaurants rather than in their homes and he decided to offer this option in his hotel too.

The cost of holding a party varies from 90,000 to 500,000 kip per invitation and the first 10 couples who choose to hold parties at the restaurant will each receive a complementary refrigerator. The hotel's opening ceremony was attended by hundreds of people including government officials, businesspeople and district authorities.

Among those in attendance were Deputy Chairman of the Lao National Tourism Administration Mr Soukaseum Bodhisane and Deputy Chairman of the Cultural and Social Affairs Committee of the National Assembly Prof. Dr Phonethep Pholsena.

Dr Phonethep noted that Laos will move from being a ‘la nd-locked' to a ‘land-linked' nation when construction of a high-speed railway from the Chinese border to Vientiane begins in the next few months.

As a land link within the region, Laos needs to improve service facilities and the new hotel will increase the options available for tourists and businessmen, he said.
