Lao garment sector grows 14%
The export value of Lao garment amounted to almost US$200 million, up by 14 per cent over 2009s, said the President of the Lao Garment and Industry Association, Mr. Onesy Boudsivongsak.
81 per cent of Lao garments, amounting to US$147.6 million, were exported to Europe; 11 per cent of the products, totalling US$20 million, went to the US market, 4 per cent to Canada, and 3 percent to Japan, he went on.
Mr. Onesy added that the Lao garment industry saw slow growth, if compared to other undeveloped countries. This is attributed to limited skilled labourers.
In 2010, two new garment factories came into operation and created 1,000 jobs for local people.
This year the garment industry is expected to see growth thanks to a high demand on the international markets.
On the strategy of the Lao garment industry till 2015, Mr. Onesy pointed that the focus would be on increasing employment from 30,000 to 60,000 employees.
In 2008, the export value of Lao garment rose by 24 per cent, totalling US$187.6 million, but in 2009 the export value was US$159.2 million only.
