World Cup sends LCD TV sales through the roof

Home appliance centres all report increases in sales revenue, especially those of 32 inch LCD TVs.

Nguyen Thi Quyen, Marketing Director of Thien Hoa Home Appliance Supermarket, reported that the number of LCD TVs sold this month is higher by 25 percent than 2009 and higher by 50 percent than the same period of 2009.

“The 32 inch LCD TVs with prices of 6.2-7.9 million dong are the bestsellers,” Quyen revealed .

Tran Dinh Luu Phong, Marketing Director of De Nhat Phan Khang, also noted that, over the last two weeks, the number of LCD TVs sold increased by 38 percent over May. “Some 300 LCD TVs are sold every day. Especially, 32 inch LCD TVs have been selling very well, which accounts for 60 percent of the total number of LCD TVs sold,” he calculated

Nguyen Viet Tiep from Nguyen Kim Shopping Centre Marketing Division, estimated that LCD TV sales in May increased by 150 percent over April and by 180 percent over the same period of 2009. According to Tiep, the bestsellers now are 32 inch TVs with prices that fit most consumers’ pockets. Sony BX300 (7.9 million dong), along with Toshiba AV600 (6.2 million dong), Sharp LC-32A39Y (6 million dong) are the most popular models.

Home appliance centres have forecast rising sales in the upcoming days. “The highest peak will be the days just before the World Cup opening,” Phong predicted.

Quyen of Thien Hoa Home Appliance Centre also forecast increased sales in the days just before the World Cup, with purchases to increase up to 40 percent.

Thien Hoa has launched a special program for the World Cup, lending 32 inch TV LCD Sony BX300s to 1500 clients free of charge to televise World Cup football matches. Clients access the centre’s website and register to borrow the TVs. They must pay a security deposit equal to the price of the TV. With the borrowed TVs, clients can watch all the football matches and then bring the TVs back to receive a 100 percent refund of their deposit.
