Forum has lessons for host's development

The World Economic Forum on East Asia was a chance for Viet Nam to draw lessons for its development, President Nguyen Minh Triet said yesterday.

Triet told forum leaders and delegates at a banquet in their honour in Ho Chi Minh City that Viet Nam was determined to integrate into the world's economy and would do its best to contribute to the development of East Asia and Asia.

Viet Nam always paid attention to combining economic development with social, human and environmental issues, Triet said. As a result, Viet Nam had in place policies to both develop its economy and deal with social issues. This included its fulfilment ahead of schedule of the UN Millennium Development Goals for poverty reduction and hunger alleviation, a result praised by the UN and international organisations.

Triet said Viet Nam also paid attention to food production to ensure food security for the country and the world.

PM holds meetings

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung yesterday also held sideline meetings with regional leaders attending the forum.

Viet Nam would do its utmost to bring bilateral relations with China to a new height in the spirit of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries, Dung told National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Vice Chairwoman Wang Zhizhen.

Dung said Viet Nam was pleased with the achievements China had made as well as the development of comprehensive co-operation between the two countries.

He also commended the co-operation between the Conference and the Viet Nam Fatherland Front Central Committee, expressing his wish that the two sides would continue to strengthen co-operation, thus contributing to the two countries' friendship.

Wang suggested the two countries further strengthen exchanges between their young people to increase their mutual understanding.

Dung asked Wang to conveyed his invitation to Premier Wen Jiabao to attend the 17th ASEAN Summit and visit Viet Nam.

Also yesterday, Dung met with Lao PM Bouasone Bouphavanh, during which he said the Vietnamese Government encouraged its enterprises to boost investment in Laos, adding that he wanted the Lao Government to assist Vietnamese entrepreneurs to do their business in the country.

The two PMs agreed to speed up economic, trade and investment co-operation and build a mechanism to provide information for enterprises of both countries to facilitate investment and production activities.

They also stressed the need to increase bilateral and multilateral co-operation as well as co-ordination in the international arena, making contributions to building an ASEAN community.

Welcoming Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Dung suggested the two countries make a bigger effort to ensure the progress of border demarcation and marker planting.

He also expressed his pleasure at the development of the long-lasting traditional friendship and comprehensive co-operation between the two countries.

Hun Sen affirmed his country's support for Vietnamese enterprises in Cambodia as well as the strengthening of multifaceted co-operation between the two nations.

They both expressed their satisfaction at bilateral co-operation in aviation, telecommunications, banking and rubber tree plantations.

They also exchanged measures to increase agricultural, industrial and rubber tree plantation co-operation.

In another meeting yesterday, Dung and Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva agreed to assign both foreign ministries to organise the meeting of the Viet Nam-Thailand Trade Co-operation Committee.

They suggested the two Governments resume meetings to create conditions for bilateral economic, trade and investment co-operation and within the East-West corridor and Mekong sub-region countries.

Abhisit affirmed that Thailand completely supported Viet Nam's position of ASEAN chairman and its attendance at the upcoming G-20 meeting.

Thailand would make a positive contribution to the success of the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Ha Noi, he said.

Dung and Myanmar's Prime Minister U Thein Sein also held talks, agreeing to direct relevant ministries and agencies to remove obstacles in order to boost co-operation in agriculture, industrial crop plantation, seafood, finance-banking, aviation, telecommunications, oil and gas, mining, electrical equipment production and supply, auto assembly and manufacturing, civil engineering and trade and investment.

Dung affirmed that Viet Nam attached importance to ties with Myanmar and wished to further develop the traditional friendship and multifaceted co-operation with the country.

He also asked Myanmar's Government to create favourable conditions to boost investment and trade co-operation between the two countries to facilitate Vietnamese business investment in Myanmar.
