Nation urges EU to end dumping duties
Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai is urging the EU to end anti-dumping duties on bicycles and leather-upper shoes imported from Viet Nam.
In a working session with the European trade commissioner Karel de Gucht here last Friday, Hai asked the EU return Viet Nam to the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) and recognise its market economy, a move which would lay a foundation for both sides to boost commercial ties.
Hai applauded the EU proposal to begin bilateral negotiations towards a Viet Nam-EU Free Trade Agreement and pledged to hasten technical preparations for the talks.
Both agreed that Viet Nam-EU relations were growing well in all fields, including politics, trade, culture and science and technology. They agreed to continue the exchange of high-level delegations and meetings in an effort to strengthen comprehensive co-operation.
Viet Nam regarded the EU a priority partner in its foreign policy, said Hai, adding that the country wanted to build the bilateral relationship into an "equal partnership and a comprehensive and durable co-operation for peace and development."
They reviewed preparations for Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung's visit to the EU in October, highlighting the significance of ongoing negotiations on a EU-Viet Nam Partnership and Co-operation Agreement, a legal framework for co-operation over the next 10-15 years.
They agreed that talks needed to be finalised soon in order for the agreement to be initialled during Dung's visit.
Both sides are celebrating 20 years of diplomatic ties this year, and the two officials predicted that Dung's visit would help lift the bilateral relationship to a new height.
