Shipping volume soars for courier DHL

The volume of packages shipped by DHL Express Viet Nam grew more than 30 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2010 and is tipped to grow even further by the year-end, according to a company official.

"The increase is due to Viet Nam's economic growth rate," said John Pearson, CEO of DHL Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. "It is the strongest country in the region during the post-recession recovery."

"The recovery of both Viet Nam and DHL is being powered by intra-Asia trade. Sixteen of Viet Nam's top 20 trade lanes are intra-Asia, all of which have rebounded strongly in 2010, especially those in Southeast Asia. After shrinking in the first quarter, the US has also recovered but Asia-Pacific trade lanes dominate both Viet Nam's imports and exports," he said.

Viet Nam's export revenue jumped 26 per cent year-on-year from January to April (Excluding precious metals) and industrial output grew 13.5 per cent over the same period.

Best performing sectors included electronics and computers, which rose 39 per cent to US$985million, and exports of tools and spare parts, which rose 75 per cent to $910million.

"As a result of Viet Nam's positive attitude to foreign direct investment, more than 100 of our own global customers are already here, and more are either setting up shop in Viet Nam or increasing their investment in the country," Pearson added.

As DHL Express maps out its plans for Viet Nam and Asia as a whole, sustainable development will remain high on the priority list.

To date, the company has improved overall CO2 efficiency in Viet Nam by 29 per cent year-on-year and despite expanding its facilities in 2009, CO2 emissions were 13.9 per cent lower year-on-year.

According to the World Bank's Logistics Performance Index (LPI), Viet Nam is the top logistics performer in its income class.

The LPI shows that countries with better logistics performance achieve better GDP, trade growth and diversification, allowing them to "punch above their weight class".

Viet Nam jumped 18 spots to rank 71st in the World Economic Forum's Enabling Trade Index this year, beating India and the Philippines.

Tim Baxter, general director of the joint venture company DHL – VNPT Express, said: "Viet Nam's strong recovery was also reflected in DHL's performance indicators. Our top 50 customers in the country have registered a combined year-to-date growth of more than 40 per cent in revenues over the same period in 2009. Top performers come from the telecommunications, garments, textiles and footwear industries".
