Highlands growth outpaces nation
Industry and trade in the northern high- and mid-lands should grow quicker than the country's average, a conference in the historic city of Dien Bien Phu was told yesterday.
But Deputy Industry and Trade Minister Nguyen Cam Tu warned that the 14 northern high- and mid-land provinces must first overcome challenges and mobilise their resources to take advantage of their opportunities.
Enhancement of the State management through better planning and proper policies was also required.
And the provinces needed to accelerate administrative reform and improve their ability to forecast trends in the commodity market to avoid speculation that would have a negative impact on local and regional industry and trade, he said.
The conference, organised by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, agreed the northern high- and mid-land provinces should target average yearly industrial growth of 20.5 per cent within five years - 2.5 times more than between 2006-10.
Viet Nam's industrial production value is expected to grow at a yearly average of 12.5-13.5 per cent in 2011-15.
The target for the yearly growth of highland trade was set at 19.9 per cent by 2015, more than double the figure of the last five years.
The conference also agreed that participants in the economy should be encouraged to join hands to develop regional industry, trade, services, imports and exports.
Total industrial production and trade value generated by the northern highland provinces since the beginning of the year has risen more than 33 per cent against the same months of 2009.
The value of regional industrial production alone has reached VND21 trillion (US$1.1 billion) since January.
