Hanoians hit supermarkets at night

Hanoians these days have the habit of flocking to supermarkets in the evenings not only to do shopping, but also for entertainment.

It was 8:30pm, but the Big C parking lot still had a long line of people waiting to park their motorbikes. The same scene was could also be found at many other supermarkets. Thanh, an officer of Intimex Supermarket, noted that he is busy in the evenings because there are so many visitors.

At 9:05pm, there was still a long queue at four check-out counters of Citimart on the third floor of Vincom tower. Hoa, a security guard, explained that the supermarket closes at 9pm, but in recent days there have been so many visitors that the supermarket cannot close on time.

At Intimex Supermarket, people were still shopping when the supermarket’s security guard announced on the loudspeaker that it was time to close. After paying, Phuong, who lives in Hai Ba Trung district, suggested that supermarkets should stay open later in the summer.

“We return home late at 6pm and can only go to the supermarket at 8om, after we have dinner. We have only one hour to shop, because the supermarket closes at 9pm,” she complained.

Many people come to supermarkets not to shop, but to play. A lot of children and parents were seen in the play area at Intimex. Lan, a visitor, revealed that her house is nearby and she brings her daughter to play at the supermarket. “It was too sunny, so we could not go out. I bring her to the supermarket in the evening to avoid the heat, and she can play with many other children,” Lan explained.

Minh, who lives in Dong Da District, ran into VnExpress reporters at Uni Mart. She maintained that she came to avoid the heat because of electricity outages at her house. “I wanted to walk on the streets to relax, but it was so hot, so I decided to go to the supermarket,” Minh detailed.

Like Minh, many Hanoians these days go to supermarkets to avoid the heat. However, they also can be potential customers.

Hung went to Intimex with his wife and two children just to avoid the summer heat. However, they found some beautiful and cheap clothes, so they decided to buy them for the children.

Ha is an office receptionist and can only shop at night because she works in the day time. She considers supermarket trips to be a type of relaxation. “I well understand that the goods here are always more expensive, but, I still like going to the supermarket,” she admitted.
