Good management key to increasing business capacities
Top management commitment is the key to successfully implementing Capacity Maturity Model Integration at enterprises, experts told a conference in HCM City on Wednesday.
Speaking at "Supporting enterprises implementing CMMI," Ashish Sehdev, assistant vice president of US-based IT institute QAI Global, explained: "To implement CMMI successfully, a company needs to have right investment, right support, right expertise, right experience. So besides the support from the government, the company's top management commitment is key."
He said for implementation of CMMI, enterprises also needed to train people, incentivise people and motivate them to follow the process.
CMMI refers to best practices in managing, measuring and monitoring software development processes, thus providing guidelines to companies for developing or hone their processes.
Nguyen Thu Ha, Head of quality assurance at FPT Software Engineering Company, which achieved CMMI Level 4 - the second highest - as long ago as 2002, said the successful implementation of CMMI by her company was owed to top management commitment.
Sehdev said one of the key challenges to implementing CMMI was that the culture of the company needed to change: It is not just about writing a good process and implementing the process, but making it a culture of the company
The official said CMMI could be implemented both by small and big companies, with each having its own advantages.
Constraints
"Small companies may have resource constraints, so it is very difficult to invest in changing development or other things but it is easier for small companies to adopt change because of less people and less complexity."
The Ministry of Information and Communications has launched a project to help 90 enterprises achieve at least CMMI Level 3. It will provide aspiring companies with US$15,000 for building and applying CMMI and $10,000 for the assessment and obtaining the certification.
It will sign a tripartite contract with the consulting company and the enterprise to ensure proper supervision.
