CPI up by 0.22% in June
The consumer price index increased by 0.22 per cent this month over the last month and has increased by 8.69 per cent since a year ago, the General Statistics Office reported on Wednesday.
Ten out of 11 commodities used to calculate the CPI increased between 0.01 per cent and 0.62 per cent, including drinking, tobacco, post and telecom services, and home utensils and equipment.
In particular, price increase of housing and construction materials was at a low level compared with previous months because prices of steel and other building materials declined.
Prices of food, catering services and telecommunication recovered in June after many months of consecutive declines. The price surged by 0.37 per cent for food and catering services but that of rice declined by 0.83 per cent.
The CPI in June had only a slight increase because the price of rice continued to reduce, plus the price of many other essential commodities, such as petrol, oil, building materials, medicines and food reduced or increased only slightly to hold back the CPI increase.
In June, the gold price rose 3.09 per cent compared to May because fluctuations in the economic situation in the US and the EU caused demands on gold reserves.
Meanwhile, the US dollar price on the domestic market continued to decline 0.17 per cent compared with May.
The statistics office forecast that if the CPI kept an average growth rate of 0.5 per cent per month, the CPI for the year would increase.
However, some economists said that in view of the CPI figures in the first half of the year, the Government should continue flexible management and free up capital to help firms ramp up production and investment to boost growth.
