Milk production to hit 1 million tonnes by 2020

The country’s total milk production is expected to reach 1 million tonnes, meeting 35-38 percent of domestic consumption by 2020, said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Animal Husbandry Department.

At a workshop on dairy production, processing and consumption from now until 2020, in Hanoi on June 22, the department said that the nation’s dairy herds will be between 450,000 and 500,000 strong by that year.

Domestic milk production has grown by more than 30 percent in the past decade, said the workshop.

However, there remains difficulties with small scale of breeding, out of date technologies and poor competitiveness of products’ quality, it added.
