Steel plant to increase capacity

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has asked the Prime Minister to approve a plan to increase the design capacity of the Guang Lian-Dung Quat steel plant project from 5 million tonnes per year to 7 million.

The plant's developer, Taiwan-invested Guang Lian Steel Viet Nam Co., Ltd, expected to commence construction early next year. When the US$4.5 billion plant is completed in 2013, it would become one of the largest projects in the Dung Quat Economic Zone, said the head of the zone's management board, Nguyen Xuan Thuy.

The People's Committee of Quang Ngai Province last month also approved a plan by Guang Lian Steel to establish a service company in the economic zone to provide support services and train workers for the steel plant, said Guang Lian deputy General Director Wang Luielin.
