Underground car park remains on paper after 7 years

Work on Ho Chi Minh City’s first underground car park cannot start next month as planned because its paperwork has not been completed, the project investor said Thursday.

Le Tuan, Chairman of IUS (Investment Underground Space), said his company has not obtained the construction license yet for the car park at District 1’s Le Van Tam Park. He did not set a new date for construction. 

The project, with an investment capital of more than US$100 million, was initiated seven years ago.

The park will have five basement floors with a combined parking space of 72,000 square meters. It is expected to meet 40 percent of the parking demand in downtown Ho Chi Minh City.

The project has gone through several delays after the government approved it in 2005. Construction was originally scheduled to be completed in 2007.

There have been concerns over the environmental impacts of the project as 63 percent of trees and plants in the park would have to be removed or cut down. As of October last year city authorities had not come up with any plan to deal with park’s flora.
