Ministry warns of foreign firms that defraud
Import and export firms have been alerted about some bogus foreign companies that are suspected of fraud, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said.
Its European Market Department reported that last month Ngan Nguyen Seafood Company inquired about two companies based in Nigeria’s Benin city, suspecting them of being bogus.
The ministry found out that Ste Rowfic Sarl and Stellite Ventures Limited indeed did not exist. Last year, many, seafood import and export firms did not receive payment on time after selling basa catfish to Hoogland Foods BV Company and Star Procurement Company of the Netherlands. Other businesses too have sold products to foreign companies in the last couple of years without getting payments, according to the European Market Department.
The Vietnamese Commercial Offices in countries and territories like Pakistan, Singapore, the Netherlands, and Hong Kong have reported that Vietnamese firms have been defrauded by companies in these places.
The most common trick is to order for large quantities to give the impression of being genuine buyers, according to the ministry. To buttress their credentials, they furnish licences, other documents, and even bank guarantees, all with apparently genuine stamps from Nigerian or Dutch authorities, which were later found to be fake.
The ministry has warned firms to carefully check the registration status, number of staff, financial situation, and other information on the website of the Benin Department of Industry and Commerce if they suspect a company of being bogus or fraudulent.
