First vessel arrives at new terminal
The Sai Gon Premier Container Terminal, a HCM City port whose first phase was recently built, on Friday received its first ship.
The 30,000-tonne Asta Rickmers ship belongs to the French company CMA-CGM.
Situated in HCM City’s outlying Nha Be District, the terminal is part of the Hiep Phuoc Port cluster. It has a 500m wharf that can berth ships of up to 50,000 tonnes and will be expanded along with the construction of another port, Sai Gon-Hiep Phuoc Port, which will begin operations next year.
The cluster will have in all wharves measuring a total of 5,000m and capable of handling 200 million tonnes of goods a year by 2012.
The Soai Rap River is being dredged to enable the cluster to receive ships of up to 30,000 tonnes to ease the congestion at Vict, Cat Lai and other ports and reduce costs by around US$400 million a year.
Under a plan approved by the Government, Hiep Phuoc and another port cluster, the Cat Lai, will take over from ports situated within HCM City.
The SPCT is a joint venture between the giant United Arab Emirates-based port operator DP World group (80 per cent) and local State-owned enterprise IPC.
