Ninh Thuan attracts huge investment pledges

Pledges worth about US$1.3 billion were made at an investment promotion conference in the south-central province of Ninh Thuan last Saturday.

Of 11 businesses that have made investment pledges, several will make use of the province’s strengths, including the EAB Viet Wind Power Ltd. that will invest in a project worth VND1.5 trillion ($83.8 million) and the Hanoi-based ICC Global Joint Stock Co. that will spend VND482 billion ($26.9 million) on the Ninh Thuan Ganesa eco-resort.

The conference, organized by the Ministry of Investment and Planning, Ninh Thuan People’s Committee and Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), attracted more than 500 prospective investors from across the country and overseas.

The Saigon Investment Corp. (SGI) was one of the biggest investors with a promise to spend VND1 trillion on a titanium processing plant, the Thoi bao kinh te Saigon said Sunday.

Nguyen Hoa Binh, President of the Vietnam Commercial Bank (Vietcombank), said at the conference that Ninh Thuan, relatively unknown to investors so far, has several strengths and potentials and thus his bank “is willing to cooperate with those investing in the province.”

Binh said a credit of around VND1 trillion will be available for the investors at low rates, adding that “green” projects in tourism, wind power and salt production will receive priority.

At the conference, Vietcombank signed contracts for preferential loans worth a total of VND460 billion to three local companies.

Truong Xuan Thin, Secretary of the province Communist Party unit, told the conference the province aims to build itself into an energy producing and reclying center of the nation, by generating nuclear, wind and solar power. Its coastline will be exploited to establish resorts, he added.

The provincial government also promised to minimize red tape and take care of the ground-clearance.

The Prime Minister has allowed Ninh Thuan to hire foreign consultants Monitor Group from the US and Arup Associates from Britain to set up a masterplan for developing Ninh Thuan during the 2010-2020 period with a vision until 2030, to develop the capital city of Phan Rang and the province’s 105-kilometer long coastline.

According to the government’s socio-economic development plant for the central coast, Ninh Thuan has been chosen for major projects including nuclear power plants, a railway route to Da Lat and deep-water ports.

Two nuclear power plants with a capacity of 10,000 megawatts have already been approved.
