Vietnam exerts efforts to raise competitiveness

Vietnam attaches importance to improving the quality of growth and competitiveness of its economy, a leading government official told a world economic meeting.

The country has been exerting efforts to improve investment climate and competitiveness, including infrastructure and human resource development, administrative reform and corruption combat, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai said at a discussion session of the 2009 Annual Meeting of New Champions under the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Dailian, China, from Sept. 10-12.

According to the Vietnamese chief delegate, ratings on the country’s competitiveness given by organisations, including WEF, showed that Vietnam has made progress on competitiveness, particularly in areas affecting economic growth.

While stressing the potential in regional trade, Hai noted that it is necessary for Vietnam to deepen regional economic cooperation, including free trade areas between ASEAN and China, Japan, India, Australia and New Zealand.

To promote its advantage of competitiveness and adaptability to a new situation, Vietnam has taken measures to create breakthroughs in the reform of state-owned enterprises, finance-banking and administrative procedures, focused on building management mechanism, and increased investment in education, human resource development and science-technology, the Deputy PM added.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the Vietnamese delegation met with leaders of Dalian city, Macedonian Prime Minister Klaus Schwab, and representatives from Huawei, Omnicom and BT groups.

The three-day WEF Dalian meeting attracted nearly 1,400 business leaders and policy makers from 86 countries and territories.

On this occasion, a WEF representative announced a decision to select Vietnam as host country for the WEF East Asia Meeting 2010.
