Bridge to China opens

A bridge connecting two commercial centers on either side of the Vietnam-China border was commissioned on Tuesday morning.

Kim Thanh Bridge across the Red River runs for 295 meters from Kim Thanh Commercial Center in Lao Cai Province to China’s Yun-nan Province.

Funded by Vietnam and China, construction of the pre-stressed concrete crossing started in June 2006 with a budget of nearly US$10 million.

Between 400 and 500 heavy trucks are expected to cross the four-lane bridge every day.

Located 2.5 kilometers from Lao Cai international border gate, it will shorten the time taken for trucks to drive from Hai Phong and Hanoi to Lao Cai and into China, where it joins a major highway in Yun-nan.

Tuesday’s inauguration ceremony was attended by senior officials from Vietnam’s ministries of Transport, and Trade and Industry, the Government Ethnicity Committee and the Lao Cai Province People’s Committee.
