Higher maximum loans proposed for workers sent overseas
Vietnam’s Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs has proposed increasing the maximum loan cap for poor workers traveling abroad under labor export contracts.
Under the proposal sent to Vietnam Social Policy Bank, the new loans would vary from market to market with Japan topping the list at VND75 million (US$4,206), while the current cap applied to laborers traveling to all markets stands at VND30 million ($1,682).
The ministry said the new loans would be based on expenses listed in a contract between labor export service providers and laborers, or by government agencies that send local workers overseas.
The loans account for expenses like passports, visas and 50 percent of the fees for vocational training and foreign language classes.
More than 45,600 Vietnamese workers were sent abroad in the first eight months of last year, half the annual target, according to the ministry’s Overseas Labor Management Department.
Taiwan was the biggest market for Vietnamese labor in the first eight months, receiving 13,202 workers, followed by South Korea, Japan and the UAE.
Starting in May, a national project to send 10,000 workers from poor local districts abroad by the end of 2010, has so far recruited 1,700 laborers and is providing training to 1,500 of them, the labor ministry said.
