Vietnam-Japan economic forum takes place in Da Nang
The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and the Danang City People’s Committee jointly opened a Vietnam-Japan Economic Forum in Danang on August 14.
This forum is part of the 2009 Japan Festival held in the central coastal cities of Danang and Hoi An with the aim of strengthening the ties of friendship and economic cooperation between the people and businesses of the two countries.
At the forum, the Vietnamese Ministry of Planning and Investment portrayed the business climate of central Vietnam, while the Japan Business Association covered the same topic from Japan’s perspective.
The forum gave participants ample time to discuss the pros and cons of doing business in the region.
Japanese ambassador Mitsuo Sakaba said that in the medium and long term, Japanese businesses will rapidly expand their operations in the Danang area. However, he warned that the area would become less attractive unless its traffic system improved.
The Japanese government will cooperate with regional universities to train Japanese-speaking workers to facilitate trade ties between Japan and Vietnam.
Danang is now home to 34 Japanese projects with a total capitalization of US$178 million.
Despite the global financial downturn, Japan remains the third largest investor in Vietnam with 105 projects whose total registered capital exceeds US$7.2 billion.
