Four firms to provide 3G services
The Ministry of Information and Communications yesterday granted licences for four companies to provide third-generation (3G) mobile telecom services for the domestic market.
The firms are the Military Telecommunication Corporation (Viettel), the Viet Nam Post and Telecommunication Corporation (VNPT), the Viet Nam Mobile Service Company (VMS) and the joint venture between EVN Telecom and Ha Noi Telecom.
The licences were awarded according to results of a competition organised by the ministry and based on the Prime Minister’s approval, the ministry said.
After granting the licences, the ministry would supervise the establishment of the mobile telecom network and the provision of its services for the domestic market, it said.
The service is expected to be provided this year or in early 2010.
The firms planned to invest VND33 trillion (US$1.85 billion) in the next three years to build up the 3G mobile telecom systems, including 30,000 transmissions stations.
Minister of Information and Telecommunication Le Doan Hop said the granting of licences to those companies was an important event for his sector and would help serve the country’s socio-economic development.
The minister asked the companies to develop the 3G telecom network to improve image quality, sound, speed of telecom services and promote telecom and information technology services to remote regions.
