Vietnamese people optimistic and economical: Surveys

In recent surveys conducted by international research firms, Vietnamese people appear as optimistic people who believe in better prospects in the future, though the economic downturn has badly affected the lives of many families.

Indochina Research has finished a survey on the impacts of the economic downturn on the incomes and spending of poor families in some big cities in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The conclusion the firm has made is that though being influenced by the economic downturn, poor households are still optimistic about economic prospects.

The surveyors selected 600 women of 25 years old and older at random from among families with the monthly incomes of less than $300 in Hanoi and HCM City in Vietnam, Phnom Penh in Cambodia and Vientiane in Laos.

Most of the polled people said the economic downturn was just temporary and believed that their incomes would be better next year.

In Vietnam, 38 percent of people believe that the incomes of their families will increase, while 47 percent think the incomes will stay at the current level. In Cambodia, 37 percent of polled people believe that their incomes will increase and 41 percent think their incomes will stay the same. In Laos, the figures are 67 and 28 percent, respectively.

The survey showed that basic needs of people have become bigger than their pockets can afford. Some 20-50 percent of families in the three countries have difficulties paying for transportation and health-care services, while 40-50 percents of families in Cambodia and Vietnam said that electricity and water prices have become more and more expensive.

Prior to that, Grey Group Asia Pacific, a marketing and brand service provider, released the results of its latest survey of Asian consumers, called ‘Eye on Asia 2009’.

Grey Group has discovered many remarkable points which could be useful for businessmen who want to build up their brand names in Asia. 76 percent of Asian people believe that the future will be better than the past, 63 percent of people are satisfied with their current lives.

‘Eye on Asia 2009’ pointed out that though the optimism of Asian people has decreased, it has not been absolutely extinguished. As people have less optimism, they tend to work harder to have a brighter future, and they also tend to be more economical.

The surveys have pointed out that 80 percent of Asian people are trying to save money for their future, as they have experienced one of the most serious economic recessions in history. They are practicing thrift and seeking to buy goods with reasonable prices in order to save money.
