Dung Quat economic zone to quadruple in size
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved an expansion of the central region’s Dung Quat economic zone to 45,332 hectares, four times its current size.
The zone, which now covers 10,300 hectares, will eventually take in the districts of Binh Son, Son Tinh, and Ly Son in Quang Ngai Province.
By 2025, the population of the economic zone is expected to reach 485,000, more than 40 times its current population of about 12,000 people.
By 2015, the economic zone will comprise a 500-hectare residential area called Van Tuong, two petroleum refineries, international deep-water ports, and industrial zone for heavy industry plants, thermal-electricity plants and shipbuilding yards.
Total investment in the zone is estimated to reach US$20.2 billion by 2015.
The zone is already home to the $3 billion Dung Quat oil refinery, Vietnam’s first such facility.
