Taxi firm in dispute over title to old cars
An ownership-transfer dispute has broken out between major taxi operator Vinataxi and current owners of some cars it had sold to other parties who had resold them, a local newspaper reports.
Between 1998 and 2001, Vinataxi sold 68 Nissan Sunny vehicles to Viet Quan Thanh, Tan Hoang Minh Trade and Tourism, and Tay Ho Trade Ltd Companies, according to the Nguoi Lao Dong (The Labourer) newspaper.
Tay Ho only got the papers transferred in its name for 12 buyers, but all of them resold the vehicles. People who bought the cars from the other two companies also failed to register the transfer, merely obtaining the papers when they bought the vehicles. The companies are now untraceable.
But they got a shock when they went for the periodic mandatory safety check by Viet Nam Register agencies. Vu Duy Quan of HCM City’s District 10, for instance, said he was refused the safety certificate last month because the vehicle was not in his name.
Quan and many others now want Vinataxi’s help in getting the cars transferred in their names.
Vinataxi said it could not help because it had sold the cars to other people and not the current owners. In 2005, Vinataxi asked the Viet Nam Register to assist the new owners but it refused since the cars were no longer used for public transport.ư
