Canada wants to promote economic cooperation with Vietnam
The Canadian government wants to strengthen economic ties with Vietnam, and resume negotiation on investment protection and promotion agreement, said a Canadian senior trade official.
Janet Chater, who is in charge of trade relations with Southeast Asia at the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, told a recent workshop on Vietnam-Canada business cooperation in Toronto that the Canadian government has added Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, into the country’s list of 13 priority markets for coming years.
Economic and trade cooperation between Canada and Vietnam continued growing in recent years, with two-way trade valued at almost US$1.3 billion in 2008, Chater said.
Canada exported goods worth more than US$ 300 million to Vietnam in 2008 and it has become the Southeast Asian nation’s 10th largest investor with total registered capital of over US$4 billion, she added.
At the workshop, participants discussed Vietnam’s economic potential and shared experience in doing business in the country.
They spoke highly of Vietnam’s economic achievements and policy adjustments to cope with the global crisis.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Canada Nguyen Duc Hung introduced the country’s projects in need of foreign investment and prospects for cooperation between Vietnamese and Canadian businesses.
He asked Canadian firms to increase trade and investment and seize opportunities for business and cooperation with Vietnamese partners.
