Vietnam signs deals to export five million tons of rice
Rice exporters signed contracts totaling 800,000 tons in June, raising the figure in the first half year to more than five million tons, Thoi Bao Kinh Te Sai Gon Online said, citing the Vietnam Food Association.
In the first six months, the country shipped 3.8 million tons of the grain, up 56 percent from a year earlier. It generated US$1.8 billion, a 24-percent year-on-year increase.
An increase in export volumes “has a positive effect” on the local rice market, pushing prices up after a two-month decrease, the newspaper said, without citing sources.
At the end of June, prices of unhusked and husked rice rose by VND200-400 per kilogram, according to the newspaper.
Unhusked rice is now priced at VND4,200-4,300 per kilogram while husked rice of best quality is sold at VND5,600 per kilogram.
Last month, several Mekong Delta provinces suggested the government raise this year’s rice export target to six million tons from the current 5.2 million tons as they have large stockpiles and expect two more bumper crops by the end of this year.
Vietnam, the world’s second-biggest exporter after Thailand, harvested 18.6 million tons of rice in the winter-spring crop, or 312,000 tons more than the previous crop, Thoi Bao Kinh Te Viet Nam newspaper said this week, citing the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The winter-spring rice crop in the country typically starts in October and ends in April.
