July CPI climbs in nation’s two major cities

The capital's consumer price index (CPI) inched up 0.77 per cent in July compared with the previous month - a 10.94 per cent rise over the same period last year.

The Ha Noi Statistics Department figures showed that in July the CPI increased for almost all 10 commodity and service items used to calculate the index, with dwelling, electricity, fuel and building materials climbing 2.58 per cent and transport, post and communications, 2.76 per cent.

The rest of the commodities and service items such as drinks and cigarettes, garments, footwear, equipment and household utensils, pharmaceuticals and healthcare services, goods and others services also increased slightly from between 0.33-0.95 per cent.

Gold prices fell by 0.15 per cent against last month, while the price of the US dollar against the dong rose by 1.19 per cent in the capital.

The CPI in HCM City rose 0.68 per cent compared with June, representing an average growth rate of 0.54 per cent per month in the January-July period.

The HCM City Statistics Department said that transport, post and communications saw the highest growth of 2.69 per cent, directly influenced by petroleum and diesel prices.

Housing, electricity, water and building materials saw an increase of 1.5 per cent.

Food and foodstuff were up by 4.66 per cent in March due to rises in the price of rice, but fell in July. The price of fresh vegetables fell by 3.28 per cent, live cattle by 1.49 per cent and poultry by 1.24 per cent.

Meanwhile, the price of processed meat was up by 0.23 per cent, eggs by 1.57 per cent, seafood products by 2.06 per cent and fresh fruits by 2.57 per cent.

Gold prices fell by 0.14 per cent against last month, while the US dollar rose 1.30 per cent against the dong.
